Where do you "go"?
Where do you "go" when you get stressed or overwhelmed or anxious or depressed or in need of comfort?
My step sister and I were talkimg about that just the other day. She is getting ready to return to her home on the other side of the world, is mentally shifting to being there, and is stressed about all she has to do here to get ready to leave.
She "goes" in her mind--in her memories--to the coast, to Cambria, to Moonstone Beach where she has wonderful memories of time with her mom. The breeze--the cool air--the smell of the ocean--the sound of the waves are all comforting and relaxing for her. The memories of being at Moonstone Beach with her mom bring comfort, and also some joy. Peace.
Where do you "go"?
Now my step sister and I were having this conversation because she was my driver and support person for this medical procedure in a neighboring city. This was not a procedure that most people have, and I did not personally know anyone who had previously had it, but I did know a tiny bit about it. I was nervous, a bit anxious, and had been hoping I could get out of having it by some intervention or illness in my life. No such luck. So, how to relax?
I realized that I "take" myself to the high Sierra Nevada mountains, to a certain spot on the road where I walk, and breathe in the mountain crisp air. Gaze at the clear blue sky, and listen to the gentle flowing river. So peaceful. So relaxed. So calming.
I actually did this during the procedure, and fell asleep a couple of times. I woke myself up saying to myself, "You can't fall asleep. You're not supposed to move your head." I was obviously relaxed.
So, where do you go? Where do you take yourself when you need some comfort or to simply relax or to be uplifted?
